Succession's Sarah Snook Was "Upset" About How She Learned the Show Was Ending After Season 4

It's the end of the line.
When Succession creator Jesse Armstrong made the surprise announcement that the upcoming fourth season would be the HBO series' last, fans weren't the only ones shocked by the news. That's because according to star Sarah Snook, the cast didn't know things were coming to an end when they returned for the new episodes either.
"I was very upset," she told the Los Angeles Times in an interview out March 19. "I felt a huge sense of loss, disappointment and sadness. It would have been nice to know at the beginning of the season, but I also understand not being told until the end because there was still a potential that maybe this wasn't going to be the end."
According to Snook, who plays Shiv Roy, she and her co-stars—including Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Kieran Culkin, Matthew Macfadyen, Nicholas Braun and J. Smith-Cameron—weren't informed that the family business drama was wrapping up until the series finale table read in January. And it wasn't just the Pieces of a Woman actress that felt the sudden loss.
"Emotionally, all of us weren't necessarily ready to be done with the show because we love each other so much," she added. "But everything has to come to an end, and it's smart not to let something become a parody of itself."
Despite being emotional about saying goodbye to the Roys, the 35-year-old also admitted that she initially wasn't sure she even wanted to be a part of the show.
"I read the pilot and went, 'I want to watch this, but I don't know if I want to be in it,'" Snook revealed. "Game of Thrones was huge and there was a leaning across the board in TV for more female nudity."
Luckily for fans and everyone involved, she has indeed starred as the politically savvy Shiv since the series' June 2018 debut. Furthermore, her castmate Braun recently echoed her sentiments regarding the show's upcoming conclusion.
"I learned about the news late in the season," he revealed to E! News March 5. "We had a feeling it could be early on, but Jesse never said, 'This is definitely the end.' I think he was not even totally sure until he started writing some of the later episodes."
Braun continued, "I think you'll get all the Cousin Greg and Tom you need this season. But of course, I'd play Greg forever if Jesse Armstrong lets me. He's been a great guy to be inside."
